At the Uptown Theater in Upper Northwest, the Congressional Black Caucus Institute sponsored the premiere of Giancarlo Esposito’s independent film, Gospel Hill starring Esposito, Angela Bassett, Danny Glover, Nia Long and an uncredited Samuel L. Jackson as a slain civil rights leader whose life and memory leave an indelible mark on the people left behind in a small South Carolina town.
The movie moves like the sleepy southern town it represents, slow but increasingly profound as it digs deeper. There were one or two winking Spike Lee inspirations in the storytelling, but aside from that Esposito is developing his own unique and passionate style. Bassett, Glover and Esposito all attended the screening and too Q&A after. Also in the audience - Tim and Daphne Reid and actor Glynn Turman.
